What is a Gravel Bike?

Terrain: Road, and Off-Road (Multi-Terrain)

Gravel Bikes frames are usually carbon (higher-end budgets) or aluminium (lower-end budgets), steel, and titanium are available but less common, with a similar road bike shape frame but with a longer wheelbase, and slightly more upright riding position, longer headtube, and shorter reach - with a different designed rear triangle for a comfortable ride, some Gravel Bikes like Basso's Tera which has a unique suspension in the rear triangle to absorb the hardness, and optimise comfort. You will find Gravel Bikes commonly come with rigid forks, but suspension forks are fitted to some. Most Gravel Bikes have drop handlebars, but some are fitted with flat bars. Gravel Bikes wheels are usually fitted with Tubeless or Tubeless Ready and wider tyres to run lower tyre pressure, and get less punctures. Wheels are 700c (you can find a few 650b) with a tyre clearance on average between 28-50mm. Gravel Bike tyres have a tread pattern to give you the best grip, rolling resistance and puncture resistance and run pressures 15-50 psi – although each tyre brand will come with its own recommended tyre pressure (this can be found on the sidewall of the bike tyre).

All Gravel Bike components and gears are usually 'Gravel' specific eg. Shimano GRX, SRAM XPLR, and Campagnolo Ekar. Higher end bikes will be fitted with Shimano/SRAM 11, 12, or Campagnolo 13 Speed Components, more affordable gravel bikes will have 8, 9, or 10 Speed.

Are you a Rim Brake or Disc Brake rider?

Gravel Bikes use either rim brakes - which makes a higher-end Gravel Bike more affordable; mechanical disc brakes used on a mid-price range road bike, or top of the range Gravel Bikes brakes are hydraulic disc brakes that grab disc rotors mounted to the hubs – these have the best stopping power, and less maintenance (usually requiring a Brake Bleed every 8-12 months) and are a superior braking system to mechanical disc brakes, or rim brakes in dry and wet conditions.
