What is a Single Gear Bike (Fixie)?
A Single Gear Bike is commonly known as a Fixie, it has a fixed single gear with no shifters, no derailleurs. Single gear bikes are used for BMX, Track Bikes, Fixed Road Bikes, Mountain Bikes, Jump Bikes, and most younger Kids Bikes.
They mostly have a fixed cog at the rear rather than a freewheel, but some come with a cog on one side of the wheel, and a freewheel on the other - called flip-flop wheel.
Confusing? What does this mean? If it has just a cog you back pedal to brake and stop, if you have a freewheel you use a brake lever to brake and stop.
It's a great commuter bike, but hills are a no-go (not a bump) unless you are the fitest of cyclists, if you can get up a hill on a fixie - hat off to you - thats an achievement.
It's a very basic bike, and some say the 'purest form of cycling'.
